Warning: spoilers ahead for Avengers Forever: Infinity Comic
Marvel Comics has revealed the first Avenger was really Thor's hammer Mjolnir. "And there came a day, a day unlike any other, when Earth's mightiest heroes found themselves united against a common threat." With those words, Marvel Comics brought together their greatest heroes as the mighty Avengers. But, more recently, the comics have revealed the history of the Avengers stretches back far beyond the days of Iron Man and the Hulk.
The first Avengers were formed 1,000,000 years ago, and they included Odin the All-Father, the first mutant Phoenix host, and other legacy heroes such as an Iron Fist, a Ghost Rider, and a Black Panther. These first Avengers faced threats on an unimaginable scale, ranging from Celestials to Mephisto himself. But Jason Aaron and Kev Walker's Avengers Forever: Infinity Comic reveals there was another secret member, unnoticed across the millennia.

It does so by taking readers to Earth-5478, a parallel dimension whose Avengers were slightly different — and who are slaughtered by multiversal villains called the Masters of Evil. These Masters of Evil succeed in slaughtering the Avengers of Earth-5478, but Aaron's script reveals they missed one; Thor's enchanted hammer, Mjolnir. Jason Aaron's Thor run established Mjolnir has a soul, the God-Tempest, a cosmic storm that was trapped within the hammer's Uru by Odin. With all the legacies erased by the Masters of Evil, one remains. "Whoever follows the sound of my thunder… should they be worthy… shall possess the power of Earth's mightiest hero."
It's a stunning revelation, and it fits perfectly with Aaron's Thor run.
