Real Housewives of New York star Eboni K. Williams opened up about her experience being the first Black housewife in the show's history, and why expanding the diversity of the show was 'necessary.' The series has been on a break since it wrapped season 13, which featured new cast members, Leah McSweeney and Eboni K. Williams. Although the fate of the show seemingly hung in the balance thanks to poor ratings, Luann de Lesseps confirmed the show will return for season 14.
After season 12 of the franchise, Dorinda Medley and Tinsley Mortimer did not return for the following season, and instead, Leah and Eboni joined the cast. Ratings and views for season 13 of the show struggled, which may have been due to fan-favorite Dorinda's absence or the tense atmosphere that pervaded during the show's filming. Season 13 was filmed in 2020 in the wake of the Black Lives Matter movement and anxiety surrounding the COVID pandemic and presidential election. Leah and Eboni expressed the greatest willingness to engage with the tense social and political atmosphere while older castmates like Ramona Singer, who clashed with the newcomers on multiple occasions, were less so. In particular, Eboni helped educate her castmates on racism.
