Tomb Raider Remastered Trilogy is finally out and has updated three classic games and brought them to modern consoles for the first time. It's a pretty exceptional remaster too, sprucing things up by giving the original games' arguably outdated visuals a fresh coat of paint. it all looks pretty new and shiny, mostly for the better, though there is one glaring exception that is causing a bit of frustration among fans.
On Twitter earlier this week, a user called vStar925 pointed out that the new visuals have had a negative impact on the game's water, particularly flowing rivers. They uploaded a video to the platform demonstrating their problem, having Lara stand next to a seemingly still body of water, but the flicking the graphics back to the older version of the game to show that it's actually quickly flowing in one direction.
It means that if you play the games with the updated visuals, you won't actually be able to tell whether a body of water will let you swim in it, or whether it will sweep you away with the current, potentially to an unfortunate death. Early Tomb Raider games have quite a few notorious underwater sections in them, so you can imagine how even more frustrating these sections could potentially be if you can't even see how fast the water is flowing.
It's a little odd that this detail seems to have been either cut or forgotten about, especially with how faithful the overall game is, giving players trophies and achievements for locking Winston in the freezer or getting on top of Croft Manor .
Of course, there's an easy workaround, which just involves you easily switching between graphical styles whenever you reach a body of water you're not sure is flowing or not. That does sound like an awful pain in the rear though, and completely immersion breaking to boot, so let's hope that the developers are actually aware of the problem and that a fix is coming to give us some indicator that you can't actually swim in certain bodies of water.
