As shown in a new demo, The Last of Us Part 1 will make the original game's wholesome giraffe petting moment more immersive with the inclusion of haptic feedback. The feature allows the PlayStation 5's DualSense controller to simulate the feeling of certain environmental aspects within the game via dynamic vibrations. The Last of Us developer Naughty Dog previously utilized the DualSense's haptic feedback for The Last of Us 2 in order to simulate the resistance of the bowstring's draw.
To say Joel and Ellie went through a lot during their journey in 2013’s The Last of Us is a cruel understatement. Most of the thrilling and tragic moments shared by the pair, for better or worse, left behind lasting impressions upon players who traveled alongside them. Despite the many dark aspects of The Last of Us's narrative, there are a few comforting moments. One of the more cherished occurs during the journey’s climax. Amidst helping Joel retrieve a ladder, Ellie spots a pack of wild giraffes wandering the abandoned city. They find one grazing near a dilapidated portion of the building and carefully pet the giraffe as it feeds. Afterward, players may observe the giraffes in peace until they migrate away.

Recently, PlayStation's YouTube Channel revealed a 10-minute Last of Us Part 1gameplay demo showcasing many of its new features. This includes the use of the PS5 DualSense’s Haptic feedback during the iconic giraffe petting scene from the original game. As Joel reaches out to pet the giraffe, the DualSense will convey a light yet noticeable reverb to give the player the feeling of contact.
