A long-awaited follow up from the artist and composer behind the ‘rhythm violence’ game Thumper, Thrasher will be releasing across Meta Quest and Steam VR in 2024.
It certainly looks like we can expect another fresh take on the rhythm action genre, with a similarly dark and twisted twist to Thumper. Thrasher is described as “a mind-melting cosmic racer and essential audiovisual experience.”
You’ll have to play using gesture controls to evolve a space eel from a worm up to a beast, racing to survive the universe’s rapid growth at the dawn of time. I’m reminded a little of ThatGameCompany’s first title, Flow.
Once again, one of the main appeals will be the soundtrack, which is coming from designer Brian Gibson, the bassist for Lightning Bolt. He’s partnered with Mike Mandel, who previously worked at Harmonix across Fuser, Rock band VR and more. They’ve formed a new studio under the name Puddle.
The biggest disappointment here is that Thrasher isn’t currently coming to PSVR 2 – hopefully an announcement comes soon. Thumper is, though, and it’s still simply excellent. Returning to the 2016 classic in 2023, Dom said, “Thumper remains a true VR classic, and its upgrade for PSVR2 makes it the best place to experience its violent audio charms.”
