The production budget was recently rumored to be around $130 million for The Marvels. However, a recent report from Forbes states that the actual budget is more than double this.
In Disney’s company filings released on September 19, 2023, it was disclosed that $274.8 million were spent on The Marvels. Out of that, $55 million was subsidized by the UK government, where The Marvels was filmed. So, Disney’s total expenditure was $219.8 million (including reshoots).
That’s almost $70 million more than what was spent on Captain Marvel, which ended up making $1.131 billion worldwide. Disney likely hopes that The Marvels will echo the first movie’s success.
The general calculation sees studios receiving half of a film’s box office taking, meaning that The Marvels will break even at $439.6 million.
However, this amount doesn’t consider the money spent on marketing the film. Adding that to the total, The Marvels might need to pull in way over $500 million to become profitable, depending on the currently unknown marketing costs.
The Marvels could find it tough to produce these numbers as superhero movies have blown hot and cold in 2023. On top of that, The Marvels went through a lot of reshoots and has a much shorter runtime.
