The brand-new No Return mode will come with six bosses to unlock when it arrives on PS5 next month. The bosses and other mode unlocks are part of the first large information drop on the single-player roguelike survival mode, which is one of many new additions to the Remastered version of the game.
Those who make it to the end of a No Return run will encounter one of six successively unlocked boss encounters. These are some of the most memorable enemies from The Last of Us Part II, including the Ratking, who featured in today’s new No Return trailer. Once all six bosses are unlocked, the encounters at the end of further runs will be randomly picked so players never know who they’ll encounter until later.
No Return lets players choose between different paths of randomized encounters across recognizable The Last of Us Part 2 locations like Jackson and the Channel 13 News Station. Each encounter has one of four types of gameplay mode, each of which come with different unlockable rewards:
There are also unique gameplay twists in the form of modifiers, such as enemies dropping pipe bombs when killed, a fog obscuring the map, and invisible enemies. Then there are optional dynamic challenges called Gambits, such as getting headshots or dodging melee attacks.
Each run will have upgradeable weapons and skill trees, but these reset after the run ends or the player dies. There are some permanent unlocks, though, like new skins, Gambits, AI buddies, and playable characters. Ellie and Abby are unlocked at the start of the game, while Dina, Joel, Tommy, Jesse, Lev, Yara, Mel, and Manny can all be unlocked. Each has unique traits that cater to different playstyles.
