Naughty Dog has officially announced The Last of Us Part 2 Remastered, with a release date confirmed for January 19th, 2024.
The official announcement comes just hours after a number of online sleuths spotted the game’s title appearing in Sony’s PlayStation Store database, fuelling rampant speculation.
The Last of Us Part 2 Remastered will not be offered as a free PS5 upgrade. It will be released as its own standalone full price game (complete with a physical special edition) though fans who already own TLOU 2 on PS4 can digitally upgrade for $10.
Headlining this early 2024 re-release is the new No Return game mode. Described as a roguelike survival experience, players will find themselves dropped into a gauntlet of randomised combat encounters, each playable character having their own unique quirks and playstyles. Each run of No Return will inevitably end in a character’s grisly demise, though you’ll be able to unlock progression rewards that influence subsequent playthroughs.
From what we can tell, this will be a purely solo experience and while it may not be the Faction 2.0 style online multiplayer fans continue to clamour for, No Return appears to be a very smart repackaging of TLOU 2’s best gameplay elements.
There’s another game mode in there too, allowing survivors to conduct their own post-apocalyptic jam sessions in Guitar Free Play. Other intriguing add-ons include full developer commentary and even the inclusion of “lost levels” originally cut from the core game.
