Sabotage Studios announced today that its indie RPG Sea of Stars has reached 4 million players across all platforms since it launched in August. This includes both of the major subscription services on console, PlayStation Plus and Xbox Game Pass. Sea of Stars launched on both platforms. This figure comes shortly after the game won Best Indie at The Game Awards earlier this month.
According to Sabotage, the game reached (and surpassed) this player count across the various platforms: PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One in addition to the subscription services. The studio did not announce sales figures for the game.
Thierry Boulanger, director of Sea of Stars and co-founder of Sabotage, said in a statement: “The team behind this game is the most talented and dedicated group I could have ever hoped to create Sea of Stars with, and I’m again reminded of their brilliance as we progress with creating Sea of Stars’ upcoming DLC, Throes of the Watchmaker.”
Boulanger also acknowledged the game’s success in the crowded release window of late 2023: “For fans to have recognized our adventure in such an incredibly prosperous year for RPGs alongside new arrivals from the genre’s biggest franchises … we simply just cannot thank you enough for supporting us, and we can’t wait to show you what’s next for Sea of Stars.”
The game’s aforementioned DLC, Throes of the Watchmaker, was originally announced as a stretch goal with its Kickstarter. It doesn’t currently have a release date. Sabotage is working with iam8bit on physical console releases of Sea of Stars in 2024.
