The Flash season 8 finale could work as the show's ending, according to showrunner Eric Wallace. The Flash is part of CW's Arrowverse line-up of shows, which is currently neck-and-neck with the flagship series, Arrow, which ended after 8 seasons. Starring Grant Gustin as The Flash, the show has been a popular hit, adapting DC's Scarlet Speedster to a very successful small-screen run thus far.
As of now, the The CW Network is up for sale, which casts a shadow on the future of the Arrowverse, including The Flash. The shows that hang in the balance are Batwoman, DC's Legends of Tomorrow, Superman and Lois, Stargirl, Naomi, and The Flash. Currently, it's unclear if The Flash season 9 will happen, despite a recent report that said it was a lock, as The CW has not given the official word. However, it appears there are contingency plans in place just in case The Flash season 9 doesn't happen.

Wallace says that they're currently writing the season finale and that "it all gets resolved by the end of season 8, so we can start fresh and clean, should we, knock on wood, be able to have the privilege to do a season 9." As no official word has been given on The Flash season 9, Wallace says that they have to prepare to close the show out, while also leaving some kind of tag or teaser to continue if given the opportunity. Ultimately, Wallace has to bring closure to the various character arcs, however, as it's too much to risk if the show isn't renewed.
