features plenty of cameos, Ester Eggs, and homages paid to the ever-expanding DC universe. But does Nicolas Cage don Superman’s red cape in The Flash movie? Has the long-awaited moment finally come? Here’s what you need to know.
.
The dream of many 1990s kids has finally come true. In the story, Barry Allen and his 2013 variant collide with the dark Speedster. Their clash opens a window to several DC universes, one of which features Cage’s Superman fighting with a giant spider. For a moment, it appears the spider has Superman’s number, but the Kryptonian retaliates thanks to his heat vision. Cage’s Superman is then distracted by the window that opens between his universe and the one with Christopher Reeve’s Superman. Ultimately, their worlds collide and collapse, much to the Barrys’ desperation.
In the late 90s, Cage was attached to play Superman in a film titled Superman Lives. The project featured Tim Burton directing from a script penned by Kevin Smith. However, the movie never made it to the production stage and was ultimately canceled. Although no footage from the project exists, concept art and costume tests have surfaced over the years.
Cage’s casting as Superman created quite a buzz at the time, as the actor was arguably living one of the best moments in his career after starring in movies like The Rock and Face/Off. Despite Superman Lives being shelved, Cage’s passion for the character remained. In recent years, he has expressed his continued interest in portraying Superman in some capacity and even named one of his sons Kal-El.
The closest thing Cage did to play Superman before The Flash was lending his voice to the character in the 2018 animated film Teen Titans Go! To the Movies.
