Warning! SPOILERS for The Dropout episode 6 ahead.
The Dropout episode 6 introduces lab assistant Erika Cheung, who quickly becomes determined to unmask Theranos, and considering how central she is to the episode and in reality, one may wonder where Erika Cheung is now and what happened to her. Hulu’s biographical miniseries details the rise to fame of Elizabeth Holmes (Amanda Seyfried) and her company Theranos until episode 5, while also repeatedly shining a light on all the warning signs people inside the company see and try to mention to supervisors or fellow board members. The picture The Dropout episodes 1 to 5 paints is one where, even if people realized Elizabeth or Sunny Balwani (Lost and Once Upon A Time’s Naveen Andrews) were lying, those they bring it up to tend not to believe them, instead choosing to believe Elizabeth’s unproven claims.
Cheung (Camryn Mi-young Kim) enters the scene as a newly-employed lab assistant thrown straight away into Theranos’ culture of secrecy as Mark Roessler (Kevin Sussman), who would later become her supervisor, hands her multiple NDAs to sign. After meeting Tyler Shultz (Dylan Minnette), he and Cheung become fast friends, despite joining the company through very different paths, as Erika is recruited at a job fair while Tyler is there thanks to his grandfather and Theranos board member George Shultz (Sam Waterston). Tyler and Erika realize soon enough that things didn’t work, but to hide that, they would be asked to falsify the reports and “remove the outliers.”
