Warning! Spoilers for Zatanna: The Jewel of Gravesend
DC Comics has released a trailer previewing the upcoming young adult graphic novel, Zatanna: The Jewel of Gravesend. The new take on the magic-based hero explores how she became the DC icon in a “coming of age” story.
In recent years, DC has released a handful of young adult graphic novels bringing superheroes into relatable situations for teenage readers. Teen Titans: Beast Boy Loves Raven follows the titular teenage super couple’s relationship as they are in the process of finding themselves, and learning about their responsibility as heroes. Now, another hero is getting the YA treatment: Zatanna.

In a trailer for Zatanna: The Jewel of Gravesend, fans of the magical hero can have a glimpse of what’s to come in the graphic novel written by YA author Alys Alden (The Casquette Girls) with art by Jacquelin de Leon. The creative team is making their DC debut as they bring Zatanna into her teenage years, dealing with issues of identity and destiny. Set primarily at Coney Island in New York, the DC Universe is uncharacteristically coming to the real world. Similar to Raven, the teenage magic-user is forced to choose between family and magic. It is set to release in print and digital in July for $16.99.
During the preview, writer Alys Alden spoke on the reimagined take, saying, “Zatanna and her whole group are a little gang of weirdos. Coney Island is such a deeply special place in real life, and Jacquelin did an amazing job bringing it to life.” She went onto reference the main plot of the graphic novel, which revolves around Zatanna and her dad. Alden said, “So much of Zatanna's story is a father/daughter story.
