Back in 2007, The Simpsons Movie hit theaters, over 17 years after the show first premiered in December of 1989. The Bob's Burgers Movie didn't have as long of a wait before getting the movie treatment, but it does share a number of characteristics. It's fun, silly, and cute. It's also working with a movie-level budget, and it shows.
It's hard not to draw comparisons between the two movies, considering both of them are based on popular Fox animated shows. Even still, The Bob's Burgers Movie is proudly its own thing, and it definitely wears its heart on its sleeve. However, for all its charm, it often feels like it's missing something.
Why Bob's Burgers Will Continue To Be A Success After Its Movie
The Bob's Burgers Movie's story is fairly straightforward: the Belchers have just seven days to come up with enough money to pay their business loan. To make things worse, a massive sinkhole has opened up right in front of the restaurant. While Bob and Linda work on making enough money in the limited time they have, the Belcher kids, Gene, Louise, and Tina, are pulled into a murder mystery after Louise discovers a skeleton in the newly opened sinkhole (now known as a «crime hole»). The stories come together with Bob and Linda asking their landlord, Mr. Fischoeder, for a break on their rent, while the kids attempt to clear his name after he is charged with murder.
For a movie adaptation of a television show, the plot still resembles something that could have been written for the small screen. That's not necessarily a knock against the story, as Bob's Burgers has done some excellent storytelling in the half-hour format, but it does feel like the movie doesn't quite push itself far enough, given that it has a bigger sandbox to play
