Rachel Zegler is officially joining The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes and will be Lucy Gray Baird in the Hunger Games prequel movie. After making a successful quartet of Hunger Games movies starring Jennnifer Lawrence as Katniss Everdeen during the 2010s, Lionsgate has spent the last few years developing a prequel movie. The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes was a natural choice for the studio to expand the multi-billion movie franchise once franchise author Suzanne Collins revealed plans for the prequel book. The story tells the origin story of President Coriolanus Snow and his involvement in the 10th Hunger Games.
Following a few relatively quiet years of development, news on The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes has picked up in a major way more recently. Lionsgate officially gave the film a November 2023 release date. After previously confirming the return of director Francis Lawrence, it was also revealed that the Hunger Games prequel movie was already in production. It wasn't until after this surprise that Tom Blyth was cast as young President Coriolanus Snow. This led to even more interest in learning who will play The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes' female lead, Lucy Gray Baird — the female tribute from District 12 that Snow is tasked with mentoring.
