A new trailer for the Fruits Basket prequel movie gives a closer look at Tohru’s parents. The film is based on the Fruits Basket TV series, which follows the Tohru Honda (Manaka Iwami/ Laura Bailey) an orphan who is taken in by the Soma family. Following this, Tohru quickly uncovers the family’s generational secret. The Soma family are each cursed to turn into different animals from the Zodiac whenever they feel overwhelmed or are hugged by a member of the opposite sex.
Fruits Basket has seen many different forms, originally a manga of the same name written and illustrated by Natsuki Takaya. After it gained popularity, it was adapted for screen in 2001 but strayed vastly from the creator’s original story. Trying again in 2019, Fruits Basket as fans know it now is much more faithful to the manga and resulted in the already substantial fanbase growing. Although Fruits Basket stayed mostly authentic to the manga it’s based on, some characters’ backstories were left out from the adaptation, like Tohru’s parents.

While Tohru’s parents are only really seen in flashbacks, Fruits Basket -prelude- explores Kyoko and Katsuya’s relationship before Tohru. Directed by Yoshihide Ibata, the film sees Katsuya help Kyoko find new hope after being dealt a rough start in life. Kyoko seeks out comfort in Katsuya as she struggles with familial and school issues. Fruits Basket -prelude- is set for release in select theatres across the United States and Canada on June 25, 28, and 29 (subtitled and dubbed). The UK is quick to follow with a dub-only release on July 20. Watch the new trailer below via Crunchyroll Dubs:
