Disney has released a new trailer for its next big live-action adaptation, Pinocchio, showing Tom Hanks as Geppetto as he wishes upon a star to make his wooden toy into a real boy.
The movie, directed by Oscar-winner Robert Zemeckis (Forrest Gump, Back to the Future) releases September 8 on Disney+. Check out the trailer below.
In addition to Hanks, the movie stars Benjamin Evan Ainsworth as the voice of Pinocchio, as well as Joseph Gordon-Levitt as Jiminy Cricket. Luke Evans plays The Coachman, while Keegan-Michael Key voices Honest John. Cynthia Erivo plays Blue Fairy, while Lorraine Bracco plays a new character, Sofia the Seagull.
The fairy tale story of Pinocchio is in the public domain, and Disney is not the only company working on a new film. Guillermo del Toro is set to direct an animated version of Pinocchio for Netflix with a cast that includes Cate Blanchett, Ewan McGregor, Tilda Swinton, Christoph Waltz, and Ron Perlman, among others. In 2019, Italian film director Matteo Garrone released a well-received Pinocchio movie based on the classic tale.
September 8 is not only the Pinocchio release date, but it's also the date of Disney+ Day 2022, and it's one day before D23 Expo begins. «In celebration, the streaming service will host special experiences for fans and subscribers, and will premiere new content from its marquee brands, including the return of the beloved Disney franchise in the all-new live action Pinocchio on Disney+ Day, September 8,» Disney said.
