Who plays Pinocchio in the new Disney movie? Directed by Robert Zemeckis from a screenplay by him and Chris Weitz, the live-action Pinocchio is headed to Disney+ on September 8. A new teaser trailer was released for the film, which revealed several of the characters, including Tom Hanks as Geppetto and Cynthia Erivo as the Blue Fairy. However, only a glimpse of Pinocchio was shown and it wasn’t immediately clear who portrays the beloved wooden boy.
Pinocchio is a live-action remake of the 1940 Disney classic. The film itself has had a long journey to streaming. First announced in 2015, the live-action Pinocchio was initially going to be directed by Sam Mendes, but the filmmaker stepped down in 2017 and was thereafter replaced by director Paul King in 2018. Zemeckis joined as director in late 2019, taking over from King. Hanks officially joined the film in August 2020 and filming began a few months later in the winter of 2021. The assembled cast of Pinocchio also includes Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Keegan-Michael Key, and Luke Evans, who previously portrayed Gaston in the live-action remake of Beauty and the Beast.

Pinocchio is one of the first live-action Disney remakes to land on Disney+ instead of getting a theatrical release. Both Mulan and Cruella released to the streaming service because of the pandemic, but Pinocchio was shifted to Disney+ primarily because Dumbo didn’t do so well theatrically.
