Black Canary star Jurnee Smollett talks about Dinah Lance's upcoming solo movie and what she is excited to explore with the DC heroine. In 2020, Birds of Prey (and the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn) served as the introduction of several iconic DC heroines while fleshing out Margot Robbie's titular character. The Cathy Yan-directed film saw the cinematic arrival of Helena Bertinelli/Huntress (Mary Elizabeth Winstead) Renee Montoya (Rosie Perez,) and Dinah Lance/Black Canary (Smollett.) After having made a lot of appearances in live-action TV shows, it wasn't until Birds of Prey that Black Canary landed her cinematic debut.
Smollett's portrayal of Black Canary received such a strong positive reception that campaigns for a solo film or HBO Max series were quickly kicked off by fans on social media. After the massive fan demand, Warner Bros. granted this wish, as a Black Canary film is officially in the works as an HBO Max original. Smollett is officially set to reprise the heroine and is currently the only attached cast member. Misha Green, who is reuniting with Smollett after on her show Lovecraft Country, is penning the screenplay, while a director has yet to be tapped.
