Batman Will Battle Spanish Conquistadors In New HBO Max Movie

A new version of DC's brooding hero arrives in ancient Mexico in the upcoming animated feature Batman Azteca: Choque De Imperios. The Caped Crusader's franchise momentum hit new highs with The Batman's massive box office and streaming numbers this year, giving Warner Bros. the confidence to invest in exciting new iterations of the legendary character. WarnerMedia's HBO Max has capitalized on the surging fandom by providing viewers access to their expansive Batman catalog while waiting for The Batman's planned sequels, including a slew of animated feature films.

HBO Max Latin America will be adding to the platform's Batman animated film library with Batman Azteca: Choque de Imperios (Aztec Batman: Clash of Empires) from Warner Bros. Animation and DC. The story will center on Yohualli Coatl, a young Aztec boy who must follow a dark path. When Spanish Conquistadors murder his father, Yohualli operates the temple of the bat god Tzinacan to become a symbol of vengeance and battle the invaders while protecting his king.

It will not be the first time the Batman franchise has traveled through time, but it will be the first on-screen Hispanic portrayal of the superhero. Horacio Garcia Rojas (Narcos: Mexico) will voice Yohualli under the direction of Juan Meza-León (Harley Quinn, Rick and Morty). Producers Aaron D. Berger, Carina Schulze and Fernando De Fuentes will work with Alejandro Díaz Barriga, a Mesoamerican historian, to craft the animated film entirely in Mexico. Storyboard artist Meza-León's experience with DC Animated Universe projects and Warner's commitment to Mesoamerican authenticity should make Batman Azteca a unique addition to the franchise.
