Every year as part of our Readers' Choice and Business Choice surveys for laptops, desktop PCs, smartphones, and tablets, we ask readers who have made use of vendor-provided tech support or repairs to rate how they feel about those services on a scale of 0 to 10. This year, we're breaking out those scores into this special report so you can see exactly where you stand with certain PC manufacturers when it comes to post-purchase product support.
Before we dive into the winners, though, please note that if you don't see a vendor listed in the charts below, it might not be a bad thing. We require a certain number of responses to each question to even provide a score. We had vendors appear in the initial survey results that don't appear here, because they didn't get any score specifically for tech support or repairs. We didn't have enough data to go on. That could indicate not many respondents need any help, which a hypothetical positive, but one we can't prove. So don't hold it against a tech manufacturer if they're missing—only if they have a low score.
The majority of PC makers who in our surveys tend to earn middle-of-the-road scores, the level of a C-minus on an old-school report card. In other words, it's usually between a 7.0 to 7.9 out of 10.
That's what makes this years' scores for tech support and repairs on home laptops stand out. The vendors at the top are scoring well above that C-minus average. In the case of the overall major winner, both scores are above 9.0.
