Here's the reason why Teen Wolf was canceled instead of season 7 happening. The MTV supernatural series, which was loosely based on the 1985 film of the same name starring Michael J. Fox, kicked off in 2011 with Tyler Posey playing the titular character, Scott McCall. Set in the fictional town of Beacon Hills, the show garnered generally positive reviews, amassing a loyal following, which was why fans were dismayed when it was revealed Teen Wolf season 6 would be its last.
While Teen Wolf had previously split their seasons before, they took a different approach in its final year. Instead of telling one singular story throughout the season, they split it into 10-episode arcs. The first half featured Scott, Stiles Stilinski (Dylan O'Brien), Lydia Martin (Holland Roden), and Malia Tate (Shelley Hennig) — as well as the rest of the pack — return to Beacon Hills for the final semester of their high school year up until graduation. The second half of Teen Wolf season 6 showed them off to their respective new lives as everyone's separated doing their own thing — that's until they're called back to Beacon Hills when a new villain arises.

What's interesting about Teen Wolf's run, however, is that, when the series was initially renewed for a sixth season composed of 10 episodes in 2015, there was no mention that it would be its last. Both creator Jeff Davis and MTV executives claim that they mutually agreed to end the show after six years as they believe it had run its course.
