If you’re enjoying Diablo IV and want to go a little deeper, then Blizzard has you. They’ve launched a new Tales of Sanctuary short story series with two new tales that they promise won’t be the last.
The first two stories are “Witness” by Alma Katsu and “The Toll of Darkness and Light” by Jonathan Maberry. This new series, seems designed to expand the depths of the Diablo universe a little bit and offer the chance to use both new and old elements to tell new stories. “The Tales of Sanctuary short stories will introduce a cast of new characters, with a few familiar faces sprinkled in,” reads the intro.
Both of the stories are available via the official announcement from Blizzard, in the form of downloadable pdfs. Each is over 20 pages long, so you'll probably need a little time to sit down and enjoy them, but if you've been plowing your way through hordes of demons over the past few days and need a break that still gives you some connection with Sanctuary and all the fun you're having in Diablo IV, these two stories should fit the bill.
In “Witness”, Katsu tells a story about a woman named Tejal, who is part of a sacred order of scribes called the Hedaji. She has spent centuries at her work. These scribes “record heroic feats and glorious deaths and capture these moments within powerful artifacts”. This is not your usual day at work. The story centers around a particular day “when a curious man with a killer's eyes steps into her parlor, Tejal reaches back through an eternity of bloodshed to recall the violent day that set her on her path.”
Maberry’s tale is connected to the first, telling the story of a man called Klath-Ulna, the Golden One, from Tejal’s point of view. Klath-Ulna “rode from town to town visiting death
