Last year, major studios withheld their theatrical movie trailers because the pandemic had still forced theaters in Los Angeles and New York to be shut during the Super Bowl. This year they're back, and we may see new trailers for Marvel Studios' Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, Moon Knight, and Pixar's Lightyear.
Given the ratings boost seen in the AFC and NFC championship games, studios are expected to spend money for a spot to capture the huge audience and generate buzz for their upcoming titles. In addition toDoctor Strange 2 and the other aforementioned projects, summer blockbusters that fans are already anticipating include Minions: The Rise of Gru,Jurassic World: Dominion, andJordan Peele'sNope.
Netflix Shows Off Their Roster Of Movies For 2022 Including Knives Out 2
In previous Super Bowls, the major studios have been known to use the sports event to create a blitz on the marketing for their upcoming films. Notably, in 2018 Netflix announced the immediate release of The Cloverfield Paradox after the Super Bowl. That same year, Dwayne Johnson went to The Tonight Show to promote his movie Skyscraper.Last year, Universal ran previews for F9,M. Night Shyamalan's Old, and its Bob Odenkirk action movie Nobody. Deadline reported on the trailers that may be shown during Super Bowl 2022.
In recent years, streamers have also been known to be major players in the Super Bowl movie trailer ad spots. Netflix recently released a 4th wall-breaking ad for all its major movies scheduled for release this year and is confirmed to be airing an ad for Ryan Reynolds' The Adam Project. Amazon, not to be left behind, will be promoting Thursday Night Football this year, as the streamer has exclusive rights to it in the fall.
