Starfield Player Discovers Heartbreaking Lore Detail
One Starfield player was recently heartbroken to discover that Labrador Retrievers are extinct in the game's universe. While this has been a well-established fact about Starfield's lore for a while now, it would appear that many fans have remained oblivious to it up until recently.
Bethesda's galaxy-hopping RPG takes place in the 24th century, a period that its lore establishes as a time by which humanity has long abandoned its home planet in order to settle the final frontier. Discovering what prompted that migration is one of Starfield's central mysteries, which players who decide to pursue the game's main quest will spend a long time exploring.
What's much less of a mystery is the fate of canines in this universe: they all went extinct. This is confirmed by one common type of loot, Chocolate Labs, whose description states that it's a breakfast cereal «shaped like an extinct canine called Labrador Retriever.» And while some Starfield players have discovered this sad lore detail about dogs within hours of the RPG's September 2023 release, Reddit user Serafim42 noticed it just recently, labeling it as «the saddest thing» they've found in the game to date. Hundreds of other fans voted to send their Chocolate Labs screenshot to the front page of the largest Starfield community on Reddit, indicating that the knowledge of dogs' extinction in this world has still eluded some players.
The thread thus gave rise to yet another popular discussion about this aspect of Starfield's lore, which saw a number of fans argue that the game's lack of dogs doesn't make sense. Those opinions largely come down to the belief that people wouldn't be willing to leave their pets behind. However, several players argued that many denizens of the Earth may have indeed stayed behind with their pets, thus simply going extinct alongside them.
