Square Enix has broken its silence on Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, but those hoping to hear a release date are out of luck at this point.
Over on Twitter, producer Yoshinori Kitase responded to a question asking, «How is development progressing on Final Fantasy VII Rebirth?» He answered, «Development is progressing smoothly and according to plan. We are currently working on nailing down a release date for the game.»
Final Fantasy VII Rebirth was announced last year and appears to be a PlayStation 5 exclusive. At the time, Square Enix didn't provide an exact release date, but it mentioned Winter 2023. It's up in the air whether that release window refers to the end of 2023 or the beginning of 2024, or if that release window is even still the target.

Square Enix also said that those who haven't played Final Fantasy VII Remake will be able to enjoy Final Fantasy VII Rebirth. Co-director Motomu Toriyama hinted that Rebirth's timeline could deviate even further from the original's as well. Final Fantasy VII Remake, which was first launched in 2020, established a new timeline different from the original game. The upgraded Intergrade version for PS5 was released in 2021.
In the meantime, fans can look forward to the latest mainline entry, Final Fantasy XVI, which is set to release on June 22 for PlayStation 5.
