A new trailer for Splatoon 3 has revealed that the game will release in Summer 2022, and will feature a new version of the Salmon Run game mode.
“The next game in this INK-redible series features new and returning stages in 4-v-4 battles, as well as new weapons never before seen in the Splatoon games,” Nintendo said.
“In the game’s single-player campaign, mammals might be returning… but what does this mean? Find out more when additional details about Splatoon 3, which is scheduled to release in 2022, are revealed in the future.”
While it wasn’t clear how the new large creature would impact gameplay, it does appear to be a significant threat to players.
Nintendo’s last showcase of Splatoon 3 focussed on the game’s single-player campaign.
Splatoon 3 introduces various new features to the action-shooter series, Nintendo said, including weapons such as the bow weapon, customisation options and new movement abilities to bring to the returning 4-v-4 Turf War matches.
The previous instalment, Splatoon 2, released in July 2017 and continues to sell well, according to Nintendo. As of December 31, 2020 the game has sold some 11.9 million units.
Nintendo released Splatoon 2‘s final significant update, version 5.0, in July 2019, after two years of post-launch support.
At the time, the game’s producer Hisashi Nogami told Famitsu magazine that his team hadn’t yet decided its future plans for the Splatoon franchise.
