By Eddie Makuch on
As part of Sony's latest earnings briefing, the company announced new sales numbers for Spider-Man 2 and the PlayStation 5. Spider-Man 2 sold more than 5 million copies in its first 11 days. The game sold 2.5 million copies in its first 24 hours to break PlayStation sales records.
As for PS5 hardware sales, the console sold another 4.9 million units during the latest quarter to reach 46.6 million sold as of September 30. During the same quarter last year, Sony sold 3.3 million PS5 consoles. The uptick in console sales is no doubt attributable in part to increased availability.

Expectations are high looking ahead to the holiday quarter coming up. During last year's holiday quarter, Sony sold 7.1 million PS5 consoles. This year, Sony has a new console, the slimmed-down PS5, to help potentially drive sales even further. There are some great deals, too, including a new PS5 slim with Spider-Man 2 for $500.
The PlayStation Network had 107 million monthly active users during the last quarter, up from 102 million during the same period last year. In terms of game sales, Sony 67.6 million games were sold across PS4 and PS5, with 4.7 million in sales coming from first-party games. Of note, Spider-Man 2 launched on October 20, which was outside of the reporting period that ended on September 30. In terms of a digital/physical split, 67% of PlayStation games sold during the quarter were digital.
