According to Los Angeles Magazine contributor Jeff Sneider, Kaitlyn Dever (Booksmart, Dear Evan Hansen, Last Man Standing) is in talks to play Abby in the second series of HBO's The Last of Us.
Speaking to the LA Times in August, showrunner Craig Mazin revealed they had found an actor for Abby already, but with the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes, had to put a pause on production. Now that both parties have reached an agreement with studios, work can continue, meaning that HBO can cast new characters. Whether that's Dever or someone else, we'll have to wait and see.
I hear that Kaitlyn Dever is in talks to tackle the role.
Interestingly, Dever came close to being cast as Ellie before Bella Ramsey took the role. She was also a popular fan pick given their striking resemblance. And as Sneider points out, she's one of the 71 people Mazin follows on Instagram. It's possible that, despite not casting her as Ellie, Mazin still wants Dever in the show and thinks Abby would be a good fit.
There is a popular fan theory as to who will play Abby, however, and it's not Dever. Speculation has been rampant for months that Shannon Berry (The Wilds, Slant, Offspring) will take the role. For one, co-creator and executive producer Neil Druckmann follows them on Instagram (as reported by Pink News). Secondly, Berry follows Pedro Pascal, Bella Ramsey, Druckmann, and the official The Last of Us account.
Many fans were also quick to point out their likeness to Abby, making them a popular choice. They even tweeted in 2020 that they often get comments from fans saying they look a lot like the character, "OK, I've seen too many people now say I look like Abby from The Last of Us and wow, they're kind of right."
There's been no official word on casting
