After the remastered releases of the original Phoenix Wright Trilogy and the Great Ace Attorney Chronicles, it was only a matter of time until the other games in the series got a similar treatment. It has been a wait, but the games featuring my favourite attorney with is almost here – Apollo Justice: Ace Attorney Trilogy. So, warm up those Chords of Steel, find yourself an adorable magician for an assistant and step into the courtroom to face off with a series of relentless prosecutors.
Those familiar with the Ace Attorney games will know what they’re getting into here, as not a lot has changed in terms of the gameplay. For those greenhorns in the courtroom, Apollo Justice falls into two main gameplay modes: investigation and courtroom. Investigation sees you moving between areas, finding evidence, speaking to witnesses and others involved with the case, and unravelling the sequence of events as you go.
In the courtroom, it’s you against the prosecutor, exposing contradictions in the testimonies of an array of quirky witnesses and others. You can find these contradictions by pressing them for more information or presenting evidence from the Court Record, resulting in a satisfying shout of “Objection!”. Unpick the testimony enough, pull apart the fibs and half truths and you can expose the facts of the case, which often results in a rather large twist.
The other mechanic that Apollo Justice has for exposing the falsehoods is the ability to ‘Perceive’ the nervous habits of those on the stands. This will slow down a particular statement and let the player examine the speaker closely to find their ticks, which can be as subtle as swallowing at a key point, or playing with the page of a book.
