Sony officially bowed out of the handheld market with the failure of the PlayStation Vita, but though the portable system represented a sophomore slump for the company in the handheld gaming space, the incredible success of its predecessor, the PlayStation Portable, is hard to forget, while there are plenty out there who still swear by the PS Vita, in spite of how things went with it.
Many have been hoping that Sony will eventually re-enter the handheld market and make another portable PlayStation system, and recently, rumours have been floating around that point to just that. Journalist Jeff Grubb, however, recently took to Twitter and stated that there might not be much to those reports.
But though Grubb says fans should “scope down expectations” of Sony making a PS Vita 2, according to him the company might instead be working on a handheld device focused on cloud streaming. Of course, that might not be to a great many people’s liking – cloud streaming technology is still a ways off from that point yet – but if you’re hoping to be able to play PlayStation games on a Sony handheld, there might be a light at the end of the tunnel.
Whether or not something actually ends up coming out of this remains to be seen. Recently, it was reported that Sony has new PlayStation hardware in the works that hadn’t yet been announced or reported on, so maybe a cloud streaming handheld is indeed something the company has in the pipeline. Stay tuned for more updates.
I am traveling to Super Nintendo World, but I see the reports about a potential Vita 2, and I would definitely scope down those expectations. I've only ever heard about a cloud-streaming handheld.
