Several fans noticed some strange contraptions in the new expansion's trailer that raised eyebrows. The upcoming expansion brings a huge amount of new content to the popular indie title, including a massive new island, several new Pals to «befriend,» new buildings and a base style, and more. Among the new things coming to is the more cryptically phrased «New Mechanics,» which developer Pocketpair hasn't elaborated on yet.
The trailer for was revealed at The Game Awards last week and fans have noticed what might be one of these new mechanics. Several Discord community members have pointed out two strange structures at around the 1:18 mark in the trailer, which was uploaded to the Pocketpair YouTube channel. Pocketpair has stayed quiet about the purpose of these mysterious structures, but the community is buzzing with ideas about their function.
The two strange structures pictured in the trailer look like cylindrical vats of fluid with some Pals suspended within them. Discord comments seem to agree that at least one of the cylinders contains a Cattiva, but the other is too difficult to make out. The structures look similar to the Pal Essence Condenser that's already in the game, which is used to sacrifice Pals in order to strengthen others.

There are several predictions for what this new base structure is used for, anywhere from «Buddy Prisons» to «Pal Beds.» The most popular theory states that these are new Pal cloning structures. If this is the case, then the game's lore may go down a similar route to the story of MewTwo from The game is already part of the way there, through the Condensers, but a way to clone Pals will take the game one step closer to its inspiration, where Mewtwo was the cloned and artificially enhanced version of Mew.
