Being such an old game, Skyrim doesn't regularly receive updates. This is for the best, considering it's almost definitely the most modded game of all time, and any kind of change to how it works can mess with a player's setup.
But now, after the last update proved to be hugely disruptive to players, we're about to get yet another just a month later. This update will be in aid of the new Creations feature, which was introduced in the last patch.
This latest update was revealed in the official Bethesda Discord server. "We hope to implement a Skyrim patch this week (The week of January 15th) to primarily address some reported issues with the new Creations menu," it reads. "While we don't have the exact timing locked in yet, we wanted to give you a heads-up and will share more - including patch notes - with you soon."
Understandably, many players are now fearful for their mod setups. Over in the Skyrim Mods subreddit, many players recommend switching auto updates off to avoid this problem, since mods aren't guaranteed to be compatible with the new update - and if they're not, there's no guarantee that their creators will go back and make an update of their own to make them work.
Bethesda also has a huge Starfield update coming out tomorrow, although it will be exclusive to Steam for two weeks.
The adverse effect that the update had on mods was far from the only issue that fans had with it. Many players compared the new Creations system to controversial paid mods, since it allows fans to sell their work on an official storefront. Of course, the Bethesda modding community has long put its work up for free on sites such as Nexus Mods - and if sales go through Creations, then Bethesda receives a cut. So far, despite the initial backlash, the implementation has been far less controversial. Likely because Bethesda is moderating the content that's put up on the Creations menu, as opposed to the free-for-all all it was when paid mods were introduced.
