Horses in Skyrim are one of the most useful assets you can use to aid you on your journey, along with humanoid followers and animal companions. Most horses are alive, such as Shadowmere and Frost, but there's also a unique steed named Arvak that you can encounter in the Soul Cairn.

Arvak is the soul of a long-forgotten horse, but you can summon the creature using a Conjuration spell. You'll need to complete a short task before you can learn the "Summon Arvak" spell, so here's everything you need to know about it.
Arvak is a horse that you can encounter within the Soul Cairn in the Dawnguard DLC. Unlike other steeds in Skyrim, you can summon Arvak using a spell, which is exclusive to this mount. Arvak is a skeleton, but he can still function in the same way as any other horse.
First, you need to enter the Soul Cairn, which you can do by following the "Chasing Echos" quest during the Dawnguard DLC's main storyline — you'll need to complete this regardless of whether you side with the Dawnguard or Volkihar Vampires. Become a vampire before entering the Soul Cairn or allow Serena to partially trap your soul inside a Soul Gem.
When you enter the Soul Cairn and start walking down the main path, you'll encounter a soul shouting about Arvak. He'll plead with you to find Arvak, but you'll first need to retrieve Arvak's Skull to summon the horse.
Along this path, you may encounter enemies of a few different varieties, so make sure to bring a weapon and a powerful suit of armor. Luckily, most of the enemies are few and far between, but they're most common at landmarks and structures throughout the Soul Cairn.
