With FX’s coming back for Season 2, Toda Mariko actress Anna Sawai has responded to questions about her potential return. Even though Mariko became a beloved character throughout the course of Season 1, the odds of her returning for Season 2 aren’t strong.
While fans will get to see two more seasons of Shogun, Anna Sawai isn’t likely to be a part of them. Considering her fate in Season 1, the actor stated that she is “not expecting anything” related to her return.
In an interview with The Direct, she reacted to the renewal of Shogun Seasons 2 and 3, and when asked about her return, she admitted her willingness. She said:
“I don’t know. I mean, I love the show. I love the creators. So it would be a dream if they ever called me back.”
However, the Monarch: Legacy of Monsters actress concluded by saying that her character got a perfect story arc. So, she isn’t expecting to be called back for Shogun Season 2. She continued:
“But you know, like her story does end. I think it’s perfect the way it is. So, I’m not expecting anything.”
With the way Season 1 wrapped up Mariko’s arc, it isn’t likely for her to be back in Season 2 unless it’s a flashback cameo, or a memory of her lover, John Blackthorne.
Besides Anna Sawai, Shogun Season 1 stars Cosmo Jarvis as Blackthorne, and Hiroyuki Sanada as Lord Yoshii Toranaga in the lead, and the two are likely to return in Season 2. Other actors who played crucial roles in the first season are Takehiro Hira as Ishido Kazunari, Tadanobu Asano as Kashigi Yabushige, Hiroto Kanai as Kashigi Omi, and many more.
Shogun Season 2 is in early development and does not have a release date yet.
