Sea of Thieves has turned into a juggernaut following a somewhat rough launch over the last six years, and it refuses to shed any of its momentum. In fact, developer Rare has announced that the game recently surpassed another major milestone where its player numbers are concerned.
Since its launch for PC and Xbox in March 2018, Sea of Thieves has been played by over 40 million players to date. As of a couple of years ago, the game’s player base stood at 30 million players across its lifetime, so it’s kept up a steady pace in terms of attracting new players.
“40 million players across Xbox, Windows 10 and Steam is an amazing milestone to be able to talk about, and of course it wouldn’t have happened without you – our brilliant, positive and welcoming community, who continue to surprise and impress us with your creativity and antics out on the waves,” wrote executive producer Joe Neate.
“That said, I also want to take this opportunity to offer heartfelt thanks to the team, who’ve worked so hard to deliver over a hundred free updates since launch and have plenty more excitement and innovation on the horizon. Season 12 is almost here, and the new additions like throwing knives and the Bone Caller are going to transform our sandbox yet again.”
Of course, it’s worth pointing out that Sea of Thieves is also set to launch for PS5 later this month, which will mean further boosts to its player base. Based on the long wait times players had to sit through during the recent PS5 closed beta period, it’s apparent that there’s plenty of demand for the pirate game on the platform.
Sea of Thieves launches for PS5 on April 30. It’s currently available on Xbox Series X/S, Xbox One, and PC.
