The Doom franchise had a bit of renaissance with 2016’s Doom and 2020’s Doom Eternal, and with it now being over four years since the last entry in the series, fans are starting to get a bit antsy to shred some demon butt again. Well, a newly discovered trademark may hint something is on the way.
Eagle-eyed fans have discovered a recent pending trademark, listed under the codename IDKFA, by ZeniMax Media (ZeniMax is, of course, the umbrella company for Bethesda). Beyond confirming that it’s for video game software, the trademark filing doesn’t reveal all that much, but we can infer quite a bit from the IDKFA title, as that is a classic Doom cheat code that gives players access to all weapons, keycards, and full ammo (ID Keys, Firearms, Armor).
This speculation isn’t just coming out of nowhere, as there’s a big Xbox Games Showcase coming up, and reliable Microsoft insider Tom Warren and others have been teasing that something Doom-related may indeed be at the show. And again, if developer id Software sticks to their 4-year timeframe for making new Doom games, a 2024 release for the latest one would make sense. Of course, all that said, until Microsoft and Bethesda actually confirm something, consider this all speculation and take it with a grain of salt.
Xbox has been facing quite a bit of blowback from once-loyal fans, as Xbox Series X/S sales flatline, they bring former exclusives to other platforms, and close studios responsible for acclaimed games like Hi-Fi Rush and Prey. It’s widely expected the Xbox Showcase will provide a first look at the next Call of Duty and Gears titles, so adding Doom to that lineup really would make it an exciting show for shooter fans.
The Xbox Games Showcase will be streamed on June 9. What do you think? Excited to get your hands on the next thing from id Software? Just how crazy will the next Doom get?
