After a long wait that spanned several months, Amazon has finally come through and discounted Samsung’s 990 PRO. The 1TB and 2TB SSDs and always received routine price cuts, leaving the 4TB PCIe NVMe Gen 4 solid-state drive the remaining variant that would be available, but for a hefty premium. Thankfully, the online retailer has now listed the 990 PRO for just $289.99, meaning that you not just have ample speeds in the palm of your hands, but a ton of storage too.
The truth of the matter is that games and various programs have become storage guzzlers, making high-speed 4TB SSDs like the 990 PRO more of a necessity than a convenience. Examples like God of War Ragnarök, which was recently launched for the PC, demand that you have an eye-watering 175GB of available space before you can fire up the game. Such AAA titles provide a visual experience like no other but at the cost of eating up valuable space.
The great thing about Samsung’s 990 PRO is that it can bulldoze the most demanding of games and programs, loading them in quick succession, thanks to its sequential read speeds that go up to a whopping 7,450MB/s and write speeds that can touch 6,900MB/s. Samsung claims that compared to the 980 PRO, the 990 PRO delivers more than a 55 percent improvement in random performance, making it ideal for heavy computing and faster loading.
In short, the speeds that can be achieved by the 990 PRO are pretty much the maximum limit of the PCIe NVMe Gen 4 standard, after which you have to spend a lot more to transition to Gen 5 solid-state drives, which we do not recommend if you are here to scout an excellent deal. We expect this offer to remain available until Amazon’s second Prime Day Sale, which will kick off on October 8, but we recommend that you pick it up whenever you have the time.
