Housemarque, the developer of Returnal, has announced plans to move into a new studio.
“Housemarque, a member of the PlayStation Studios family and Finland’s longest-standing gaming firm, is gearing up to launch one of the Nordics’ most advanced gaming headquarters by the end of 2024,” said Mikael Haveri, Housemarque’s brand director.
The new studio will be located in Helsinki, the nation’s capital. “This facility will not only be a testament to our rich gaming legacy but will also be a beacon of innovation and creativity in the Northernmost capital,” Haveri added.
“Sustainability remains core to our values. Our revamped hub will champion green initiatives, ensuring a balance between technology and planetary care. As we embark on this transformative journey, we’re committed to further solidifying our position in the world of gameplay innovation.”
Housemarque’s next game will be a new intellectual property rather than a sequel, although the title will incorporate ideas and narrative systems originally planned for Returnal.
Returnal was met with critical acclaim upon launch, though it didn’t sell as well as Sony‘s other flagship first-party offerings.
In June 2021, Sony claimed the game had sold around 560,000 copies on PlayStation 5 during the first two months, which was within its expectations.
Following months of speculation, a PC port of Returnal was finally announced in December 2022.
