No matter the fighting game that gamers talk about, there is almost always going to be a question about why a certain character got brought onto the roster. Sometimes, it’s because they don’t seem to “fit” in the roster. Other times, it’ll be because they are a bit more “niche” than the rest of the cast. But sometimes, it’s because the fans never expected them to make it into the game and are shocked that they did. For Dragon Ball FighterZ, the team behind it put a lot of effort into ensuring that just about every generation of Z-Fighter made it into it, even if that meant bringing in some “unexpected choices.”
One of those choices for Dragon Ball FighterZ was Videl, the daughter of Hercule Satan and the wife of Gohan. The reason many people were shocked by her announcement was that while Videl did learn to harness Ki to an extent thanks to training with Gohan, she never went full “Z-Fighter” and did things like energy attacks or tried to go to the next level with that training.
Even the game’s producer, Tomoko Hiroki, noted in an interview with the official Dragon Ball website that when he heard the team wanted to bring in Videl, he wasn’t on board with it at first:
“I actually debated about adding Videl a lot, since I wasn’t sure if it was right to have her fight on the same level as other more canonically powerful characters. The Videl fans on our marketing team and over on the Arc System Works development team ended up changing my mind, though. In the end, I decided that she wouldn’t be out of place if we included Great Saiyaman to support her and help her fight. That led to the debut of a new 2-in-1 fighter on the fighting game scene, and I’m happy with the result.”
