“Set in 1940s Mexico City, it follows William Lee, who has fled from a drug bust in New Orleans. In Mexico City, Lee wanders around the city’s clubs and becomes infatuated with drug user Eugune Allerton, a discharged American Navy serviceman,” the synopsis for the movie reads.
Along with Knives Out’s Craig, Queer stars Drew Starkey, Jason Schwartzman, Lesley Manville, Henry Zaga, Drew Droege, Ariel Schulman, and David Lowery.
The movie is based on a 1985 novel of the same name that was written by William S. Burroughs. The script was written by Justin Kuritzkes, who previously penned 2024’s Challengers. Guadagnino directed Challengers, which stars Zendaya, Josh O’Connor, and Mike Faist.
Guadagnino’s filmography also includes 2015’s A Bigger Splash, 2017’s Call Me by Your Name, 2018’s Suspiria, and 2022’s Bones and All, among other titles. He’s now working on a new movie called After the Hunt, which will star Julia Roberts, Ayo Edebiri, Andrew Garfield, Michael Stuhlbarg, and Chloë Sevigny.
During the Venice Film Festival, Guadagnino said he’d wanted to work with Craig for a long time; however, he was unsure if he would be interested in the project when they initially approached him about the role.
“A gentleman that was in the [casting] room was really the one that was not pragmatic and said to me, ‘What about Daniel Craig?’ And I said, ‘I thought about him, but he’s never going to say yes.’ And he said to me, ‘Let’s ask.’ And he said yes,” he said via The Hollywood Reporter. “And the yes was a definitive yes. He’s one of the greatest actors. It’s a privilege to work with someone like him.”
