A new trailer revealed the Pokémon GO expansion for the Pokémon TCG, with a themed set and new card art arriving in Summer 2022. Last summer, Pokémon GO celebrated its five-year anniversary, with in-person and virtual events bringing new and veteran fans alike to the mobile game. Players caught 1.5 billion Pokémon during Pokémon GO Fest 2021, an impressive tally and a representation of the game’s continued popularity. The Pokémon TCG has had its own success in recent years, with many big-box retailers being forced to limit or even ban card sales due to buyer frenzy. Target even pulled Pokémon trading cards from its shelves to ensure employee and customer safety.
Despite their combined success, Pokémon GO and the Pokémon TCG have rarely collaborated, with the free-to-play mobile game existing as its own entity within the Pokémon Expanded Universe. To celebrate the franchise’s 25th anniversary, however, a Pokémon GO Professor Willow card was made available during Summer 2021 and was obtainable in stores where the Pokémon TCG was sold. The special promo Trainer card was a Supporter that allowed players to discard their hand to draw seven new cards. During the promo release, Professor Willow’s Pokémon TCG debut was listed as Part 1 of a collaboration, though any further plans to connect Pokémon GO with Pokémon TCG were kept a secret.
