Wordleis a game that doesn’t need much introduction, being a massive viral hit long before The New York Times bought it in January.
Part of the fun of the free word game is that it lets players share their scores on Facebook and Twitter without spoiling the answer. Normally, it’d be impossible to fake one’s score, and there’s not much reason for doing so. However, some experienced Wordle players accused NBA star Karl-Anthony Towns of doing just that.

On Friday night, Towns shared that he’d successfully guessed that day’s word “ulcer” on the third try. Specifically, the results appeared to show that he correctly guessed “U,” “E,” and “R” in the correct space on the first try. The second guess appeared to show those letters plus “C” in the wrong place.
While that might seem like the perfect combination of luck and Wordle skill to most people, expert Wordle players were suspicious of the results. Towns' tweet soon received several replies from experienced players pointing out that his second guess was impossible. This is because there are only 26 letters that could have come after the “U” in Towns' second guess. As the Wordle experts pointed out, none of these possible combinations are permitted words in the game’s dictionary.
While some Twitter users were quick to suspect trickery on the part of Towns or his social media team, the Minnesota Timberwolves player soon presented an alternative explanation. According to his follow-up tweet, Towns explained that his game still showed Thursday’s Word “pause,” which was number 236. However, the game’s share function incorrectly listed it as Wordle word 237. Town shared the proof of his tweet, which clearly shows his game
