Warning! Spoilers ahead for Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.
Following the debut of the multiverse, the MCU's Phase 4 has begun to set up one of Marvel's most controversial comic book plots while avoiding one of the biggest things that made it so problematic. Currently, there are several signs that the MCU is headed toward Secret Wars, a story that saw universes violently colliding with chaotic and disastrous results, particularly after Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. It was also an event that hardly required any villains leading up to it, seeing as how some of the Marvel Universe's most powerful heroes were becoming the villains themselves.
As introduced in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, multiversal incursions are when disruptions between universes cause two universes to collide with each other, destroying one or both in the process. This followed the introduction of the multiverse itself in Loki as well as showcasing its dangers in Spider-Man: No Way Home. According to the Illuminati members of Doctor Strange 2's Earth-838, their version of Doctor Strange and his multiversal meddling inadvertently caused an incursion, destroying an entire universe full of innocent life. Likewise, the primary Doctor Strange of Earth-616 met another Strange, known as Sinister Strange, who destroyed his own universe due to an incursion as well. Seeing as how an influx of incursions is what led to 2015's Secret Wars event that rebooted the Marvel Comics continuity with a clashing of worlds, it does seem as though the MCU is headed for its own Secret Wars adaptation.
