The winds are changing, and single player Japanese RPGs are enjoying a bit of a renaissance as a result. We reported earlier in the week about how Steam player numbers were reflecting extremely well on titles like Granblue Fantasy Relink and Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth, and now we have further evidence of the genre’s success: Persona 3 Reload has become Atlus’ fastest selling game ever.

Within a week, the title has sold over one million copies worldwide – and that’s despite it being included on Xbox Game Pass, which we’re assuming isn’t contributing to the numbers here.
Persona’s popularity has, of course, been trending upwards for a little while now: the PS Vita’s Persona 4 Golden achieved cult status which led to increased anticipation for Persona 5. This groundswell of enthusiasm eventually prompted protagonist Joker to be added to the uber-mainstream Super Smash Bros Ultimate, a sure-sign of the series’ newfound mainstream popularity.
It helps that Reload is an outstanding game, though. “In terms of gameplay, it's easily the best incarnation of a classic RPG, boasting countless quality of life and mechanical adjustments that place it alongside the outstanding Persona 5 Royal,” we wrote in our Persona 3 Reload PS5 review. “Storytelling enhancements make the plot even more impactful, and the remade visuals are a joy to behold. Reload is borderline essential if you're yet to experience Persona 3, while also providing a near perfect way for existing fans to relive a seminal release.”
