Console sales are crucial, and Sony will be pleased it’s shipped almost 55 million PS5s to date – but monthly active users are also an important metric for organisations these days. Platform holders want customers to be logging in often, because when they’re engaged, there’s a good chance they’ll spend money on software and add-ons through the PS Store.

The Japanese giant will be especially satisfied that the PS5 and PS4 were able to pull in 123 million monthly active users as of 31st December, 2023, then, as this represents an increase of over 11 million year-over-year. Obviously, this number will likely dip during the current quarter, as the holidays tend to pull in more players overall – but it’s still a positive that the PSN is trending up.

People love’s playstation!
Jumping back to PlayStation I have noticed that certain games I play are more populated.
Monster Hunter World and Destiny 1, two older games that have more active players on PlayStation.
Rocket League, for example, I’m almost always playing with PlayStation players. Like, both teams are all PlayStation. On Xbox I would rarely see that. Maybe one teammate was Xbox and the rest of the players were not.
The only exception I found to this was Exoprimal. That was 90% Xbox players vs PlayStation because of the release being on Game Pass. Not sure how it is now though.
It definitely feels like a bigger community on PlayStation, which makes sense because it is.
55 million PS5's sold, 123 million active users. This means that PS4 is still extremely popular which is FYI to those who are still wondering why it is so heavily supported. I can't see that changing any time soon.
