Overwatch 2 continues to be somewhat controversial among its player base, with how the game handles aspects like its Battle Pass, hero balance, and, more recently, matchmaking. After numerous complaints throughout Overwatch 2‘s first competitive seasons regarding matchmaking in the game, Blizzard has recently pushed out some matchmaking changes that should lower skill discrepancy for teams across the board.
One of the major complaints in Season 2 of Overwatch 2 was the lack of balance in competitive game modes. Many players stated games would pair them up with players of different ranks, resulting in games that were too one-sided for one team. At the start of Season 3, the team at Blizzard introduced a new matchmaking system where players would face players mirroring their ranks. For example, one Diamond player on one team would always result in a Diamond player on the other team. Unfortunately, this caused some issues for the community.
Players found that these matchmaking changes still weren’t able to adequately match up players in the same skill bracket. For instance, many Platinum or Diamond players would report entering games where they would have to play with Master or Grandmaster players. This has led to not only confusion within the player base, but a number of games with poor match quality due to the wide range of skill in one match.
In response, Overwatch 2 Game Director Aaron Keller released a statement on Twitter, stating: “Working hard on reducing matches that have players with wide skill ranges.
