Aaron Keller, the Overwatch 2 Game Director recently put out an in-depth blog about matchmaking in Overwatch 2, and why players have noticed changes recently. Matchmaking is something that the Overwatch team has been working on heavily since the launch of Overwatch 2, and are constantly making improvements.
Over the last week, they have made significant improvements in reducing the skill gap in matches. Poor match quality spiked with the launch of Season 3, but it has now returned to about where it was before season 3.
The reason matchmaking quality dropped in Season 3 was because Blizzard wanted to reduce queue times, primarily for unranked matches. However, the changes to the unranked matchmaker also affected the competitive matchmaker, and they have been working to fix this since.
There will be even more matchmaking improvements coming with Season 4. In the mid-season 3 patch, Blizzard the ability to match parties together that have a similar player skill difference, which helps with both queue times and match quality.
