Get ready for another foldable phone launch, this time from OnePlus.
On Thursday, the company announced it’s holding a launch event for its upcoming foldable device on Oct. 19. The smartphone vendor confirmed the product will be called the OnePlus Open. The website dedicated to the launch event also gives us an official, albeit shadowy, look at the device’s design.
The hardware seems to bear a resemblance to Samsung’s Galaxy Fold Z 5. But the company is promising the OnePlus Fold will stand out from the competition. A OnePlus executive told The Verge the upcoming device will “bring the foldable experience to new heights.”
OnePlus has also been teasing the foldable phone’s design in tweets earlier this week, including a look at the alert slider on the device’s edge.
Although foldable phones remain more of a niche market, research firms say that sales of the devices are gaining steam among consumers. In Q1, sales for foldable phones increased 64% year-over-year to reach 2.5 million units, thanks to growing interest across all major markets, but especially in China, according to Counterpoint Research.
So it’s perhaps no surprise OnePlus has decided to enter the foldables market, months after Google introduced its own Pixel foldable device. Current rumors suggest the OnePlus Open will arrive for $1,699.
The company plans on holding the launch event in Mumbai, India. But it looks like OnePlus will also live stream the proceeding starting at 10 a.m. EST. Pre-orders for the foldable phone will kick off on the same day, with the company promising early adopters a $200 discount on the device.
