Lacrimosa of Dana begins with the swordsman Adol Christin and his companion Dogi board the luxurious ship the Lombardia in a voyage across the Gaete Sea. The Lombardia travels into troubled water, only to be shipwrecked on Seiren Island, a mysterious place that is said to be cursed. Between trying to establish some sort of base him for the Lombardia survivors, Adol must fight for his life against primordial beasts. But most surprising is Dana, a powerful young woman from a distant era. Before meeting her in the flesh they meet in dreams through a shared consciousness. Unsure of what these dreams mean, it is eventually revealed that the fate of the human race can be determined on this cursed island.
